Singaporeans prepare for sleepless World Cup final night

SINGAPORE : With a few hours to the World Cup final, soccer fans in Singapore are all charged up over the match between France and Italy.
It only happens once in four years and soccer fans have been staying up late to watch their teams in action in Germany.

Who will emerge victorious, France or Italy?

To help fans with the answer, hotels, pubs, clubs, schools and even mosques have arranged for live telecasts of the World Cup final.

Nearly 500 members of the French Chamber of Commerce and their associates will gather at The Royal Crown Plaza along Scotts Road to watch the match on the jumbo screen, complete with champagne and fine wine.

As for local football fans, they say they are looking forward to the match, but not what comes after.

"I'm probably going to go home, finish up my homework and later on watch soccer. I'm going to meet my friends, maybe watch soccer at CHIJMES. I think France is going to win ... I'm going to school tomorrow at 8 am and I'm planning to skip. There is no way I'm going to school with my tired eyes, so I am going to skip, most probably," said one fan.

"So far, I've watched all the matches. It's tiring, but I have to go back to work again. I'm hoping because I support an Italian club, I hope Italy will win the cup," another fan said.

And you could say that a family that stays together watches football together.

This applies to 47-year-old businessman Haji Abdul Jaleel and his extended family.

They are planning to stay up to catch the final.

He said, "Italy may win, Italy may win. All of us are going to watch the match tonight and all of us are going to be late to work."

Even his youngest son Salman will watch the match.

And what about school?

"I'll cancel," Salman said.

"No, no, tomorrow you're going to go to school," his father said.

Like many others, Salman and his family will just have a few hours of rest before getting up for school or work on Monday. - CNA /ct
