HAVE YOUR SAY: Government encourages more Singapore PRs to take up citizenship

I refused to give up on my USA citenship due to better Deaf life. so I prefer to stay Singaporean PR status.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Government is moving to encourage more Permanent Residents in the country to take up citizenship.

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said some PRs will be approached to become citizens and if they don’t do so, their status will not be renewed.

Immigration was one of many issues tackled during a dialogue session with over 200 residents from Marine Parade to gather feedback on the Prime Minister’s National Day Rally.

SM Goh did not give details on getting PRs to take up citizenship.

"Moving forward, we are going to approach some of them to take up Singapore citizenship, if they don’t then their PR will not be renewed. That’s a better way.

"We now have quite a few PRs, 500,000 in Singapore, so hopefully maybe 50,000 can be selected to become Singapore citizens, the rest can be PRs, contributing to Singapore’s economy," he said.

SM Goh was responding to a suggestion from a participant who said Employment Pass holders should take up citizenship which he believed will discourage foreign talents from working in Singapore.

Besides, SM Goh pointed out that Employment Pass holders serve as buffers where their numbers can be reduced during a downturn.

Another radical suggestion put forward was to bar foreigners from buying private property but SM Goh noted developers would just build more high—rise private apartments to counter it.

"At the moment, our policy will be, condominium, private sector. They want to buy, let them buy because they actually bring in money for Singapore. They may not actually stay there but they bring in money.

"They buy from locals, locals are happy to get the money but it’s not actually adding to space. In fact, that’s actually ideal. They buy here, they don’t drive cars, they don’t live here, we just get their money! They’re buying air!" laughed SM Goh.

Separately, SM Goh revealed it will cost S$1 billion to upgrade the train signalling system to increase capacity and reduce the waiting time for commuters.

He said problems can be resolved rationally but noted that for every solution, there are consequences.

Citing overcrowding in trains, SM Goh said the problem is expected and can be addressed.

In this case, resources have to be put in place to upgrade the system.

The cost may not be passed down to commuters directly, but SM Goh pointed out that it has to be defrayed.

Similarly, there are consequences with measures introduced in the property sector.

SM Goh acknowledged the situation has resulted in many unhappy Singaporeans, and he sought to put things in perspective.

"Those who missed out, those who can’t buy this, who can’t upgrade and so on, so we are really feeling the unhappiness, question is was the policy good?

"Unhappiness, those who are happier, in total there’s net happiness, there’s no such thing called total happiness, don’t believe in it. It’s whether we create net happiness in all this," said SM Goh.

He added it is "very difficult to satisfy everybody" and in politics, trying to make everybody happy is "impossible".

They key, said SM Goh is to "make the most number of people happy, the most number of times".

Another idea worth considering in managing transport woes is to have a "zero vehicular traffic growth".

"Let the COE take care of the number for cars on the road so when the number of cars cannot grow when the COE is so high then the roads will be freer so it’s a combination of high COEs and low ERP.

"But we have opted in the last 10 years or so to give Singaporeans the 4 wheels so we have opted for 3% growth in vehicle population and therefore use ERP to tweak it because one can argue that’s fairer." he said.

The question is to decide which is the best way forward, said the Senior Minister.

He also answered questions on why the $9,000 award to recognise the contributions of NSmen is not extended to all who have served the country.

SM Goh said authorities can consider giving older Singaporeans a token for their contributions.

"I think the old days, the financial sacrifices were much more because you were paid just a nominal sum but there were other benefits. If you were born earlier, maybe you bought your HDB flat cheaper! So you cannot argue.

"Your point is whether we can recognise in some way, token well I think we take note so that in future, they can remember the older ones, just a token, maybe past 55, help them with their medical top ups, I think that’s possible. It’s a suggestion we will take note."

SM Goh was relaxed and candid in his answers. At several points, he threw questions back, seeking a consensus on issues.

His message — that Singapore’s problems can be resolved rationally, no matter how complex, with a good dose of the Singapore Spirit. — CNA/fa

What do you think of this move? If you are a PR, would you take up citizenship?

Sushi-hungry Japan sells monster tuna

TOKYO (AFP) - – A monster tuna caught off Japan turned heads at a Tokyo fish market Friday, where the 445 kilogram (981 pound) bluefin -- the biggest caught here since 1986 -- sold for 3.2 million yen (36,700 dollars).

"Many of the people who work at the market have never seen a tuna that big," said an official of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which runs the Tsukiji fish market, the world's biggest seafood market.

The fish, which was auctioned at 7,200 yen per kilogram, had already been gutted and cleaned of its gills, meaning it must have weighed more when it was caught off Nagasaki prefecture this week, the official said.

"It is extremely rare to see a tuna heavier than 400 kilograms," he said.

The biggest Japanese tuna sold at Tsukiji was a 496-kilogram beast caught in April 1986 -- but the biggest tuna from the world's oceans to be sold here was a Canadian fish caught in 1995 weighing 497 kilograms.

Decades of overfishing have seen global tuna stocks crash, pushing some Western nations to call for a trade ban on endangered Atlantic bluefin tuna.

Japan consumes three-quarters of the global bluefin catch, a highly prized sushi ingredient, known in Japan as "kuro maguro" (black tuna) and dubbed by sushi connoisseurs as the "black diamond" because of its scarcity.

A piece of "otoro" or fatty underbelly can cost 2,000 yen (22 dollars) at high-end Tokyo restaurants.

Giant monitor lizard causes stir in HDB estate

SINGAPORE : A giant monitor lizard caused a stir in Rivervale in Sengkang estate on Sunday afternoon.

The lizard, which was about two metres long, was tied up by residents.

Rescuers from the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) removed the rope and tape.

A spokesman from ACRES said the creature appeared to be very tired and upset.

They have released it to a suitable habitat that is approved by the National Parks Board.

ACRES said the monitor lizard could have used the drain to get to the housing estate after a heavy downpour. — CNA/ms

Partial lunar eclipse on Saturday

I saw this moon at 945pm last night in Singapore.\

SINGAPORE : It is a full-moon day this Saturday, but for about three hours in the early evening, half of it will be obscured. The partial lunar eclipse will begin at 6.16pm.

Prof Lim Tit Meng, chief executive of Science Centre Singapore, said: "The eclipse process will start about 6.16pm on Saturday evening. However, we can't see that as the moon is still quite low. And by the time we can see the moon with the eclipse, the eclipse has already happened."

At the peak of the eclipse, 54 per cent of the moon's surface will be shadowed.

To view this celestial event, the Science Centre has set up nearly 20 telescopes for astronomy buffs and the public.

There will also be talks by experts from The Astronomical Society of Singapore and a former NASA engineer.

Prof Lim said: "Because this time the eclipse happens quite early in the evening, so the best place to see this is actually on the eastern side of Singapore. So Changi beach, Marine Parade - these are all good places to see the initial stages of the eclipse."

"About 7.45pm, we can see half of the moon being darkened because of the shadow of the Earth cast on the Moon surface. And from then on, you see the shadow moving away, and the Moon will return to its brightness."

City Harvest co-founder living it up in L.A.

(She and her hubby are nice and I dont think, they made a mistake)

Imagine living in a S$28,000-a-month rented estate where famous Hollywood celebrities such as Paris Hilton’s sister Nicky, “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera and British singer Leona Lewis are your neighbours.

If luck is on your side, you could even cross paths with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who are also said to own a property in the vicinity.

Sounds too good to be true?

The Hollywood Hills estate is the place singer Ho Yeow Sun, 40, popularly known as Sun Ho, calls home since she moved to Los Angeles for her music career.

She is the wife of Reverend Kong Hee, 45, and co-founder of City Harvest Church and has been commuting between Singapore and the U.S. since 2003.

According to The New Paper, the Hollywood mansion Ho has been renting for the past year is listed for sale at S$7.7 million. It’s reported that Ho lives there with her 5-year-old son, Dayan, an assistant, a nanny and her relatives.

The profile of residents in the neighbourhood is said to comprise millionaires and high-profile businessmen who like the quiet, peaceful and well-policed area with a low crime rate.

The report’s detailed description also indicates that the dark green Spanish Mediterranean-style building Ho is renting stands out from the rest of the properties in the area due to its large size.

The estate stands on 29,000 sq ft of land or about a third of a football field. It’s made up of a main house, three self-contained structures, with quarters for a butler, nanny and maid. Not only does it boast a swimming pool, a sundeck and a two-car garage, its driveway still has space for another 9 cars.

The total built-up area of the estate is 6,766 sq ft or about the size of 5 five-room HDB flats, while the 4,135 sq ft main house has four bedrooms.

The paper also said the housing agent in charge of the property described Kong Hee’s wife as “Singapore’s top singer and entertainer” while a neighbour said she was very “sophisticated and seems traditional” as she often hosts gatherings during special occasions like Chinese New Year.

Back in Singapore, the couple also made some big property moves through the years.

They started off in a five-room HDB flat in Tampines which was purchased at S$127,000 before selling it for S$420,000. They then moved to a unit at Horizon Towers costing S$1 million in River Valley before selling it off to buy a new apartment at The Suites at Central on Devonshire Road, said to be worth about S$2.6 million.

Ho returned to Singapore last Monday to assist the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) in an investigation into alleged misuse of church funds. She was said to have been grilled by police for more than eight hours.

Her husband, Kong Hee recently explained his silence in a Facebook post that said, “Because we’re in the midst of the investigation, I am unable to provide any details about the progress besides what already has been released by the Singapore Police in their statement to the press.”

“But I would like to assure everyone that I, together with the Management Board of the church, am fully cooperative in providing the necessary information needed for the investigation,” said the Pastor, who himself was recently accused of plagiarising three prominent Christian authors.

The couple and at least 16 others connected to the City Harvest Church are currently assisting the CAD in ongoing investigations.

Collision causes oil spill in Singapore Strait

Collision causes oil spill in Singapore Strait

Print..Topics:Economy Government and Policy.On Tuesday 25 May 2010, 14:41 SGT

Emergency teams scrambled to contain some 2,000 tonnes of crude oil that leaked Tuesday into the Singapore Strait after two vessels collided in the busy waterway, port officials said.

Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority said the Malaysian-registered tanker MT Bunga Kelana 3 had collided with the MV Waily, a bulk carrier registered in St Vincent and the Grenadines, damaging a cargo tank on the Malaysian vessel.

Four patrol and emergency response vessels and three private craft equipped with oil-spill equipment had been sent to the area, it said, adding: "Work is ongoing to contain and clean up the oil spill."

Nobody was injured and shipping traffic was not affected by the incident, which took place 13 kilometres (eight miles) off Singapore shortly before dawn, the MPA said. Both vessels were at anchor after the incident and neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia had been kept informed.

Malaysia's Maritime Enforcement Agency told AFP the collision had torn a 10-metre (33-foot) gash in the tanker's port side.

The tanker's operators, Malaysia-based AET, said in a statement: "Oil booms are being placed around the leaked cargo to contain the spill."

It said the ship had been "hit by the bow of the other vessel as Bunga Kelana 3 was travelling from east to west in the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) of the Singapore Strait."

The TSS is a commercial channel running along the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

Salvage operators interviewed by AFP said the spill could potentially be damaging for the environment but the authorities' swift response would significantly lessen the impact.

"I think it can be controlled. 2,000 tons will not do as much damage if the teams are already there," a salvage operator who did not want to be named said.
