Accord to Deaf View: I think, this movie was really good for hearing asian people to understand that Deaf Asian people are not dumb or Mute!!! but I dont like aobut this movie. when a hearing person talked to elderly deaf woman, she just do is noddle her head that she is understand and agree with them. It made me feel that Elderly deaf woman is not really own true ID as a DEAF PERSON! I do know Korean/Japanese sign Language, I am pretty sure that they are not correct as a potical as Korean Sign Langauge. I hopeully that hearing Asian people is not get wrong idea about this movie.

How can teacher call my son a FUTURE KILLER? (30 Sept)

FIRST, he was shocked when his 12-year-old hearing-impaired son came home with a swollen cheek.
Next, he was aghast when the boy told him about the slapping punishment that his teacher at the Singapore School for the Deaf (SSD) meted out to him and nine other boys.
Then, Mr Buang Kalil, 57, was outraged when the same teacher sent him a letter to explain why his son, Maswan, was punished.
The letter, he felt, insulted his son further by saying the boy was 'capable of unimaginable deviant behaviour', and has 'a strong potential for killing or being killed'.

Mr Buang, a security guard, has since gone to the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf), his Member of Parliament and the police over his son's slapping.
As a result, all three staff members have left the school.
He said he was 'provoked' by the letter from teacher Ranjani Fernando, which accused Maswan of being a troublemaker since age 9.
Maswan is the second of three children. His older brother and younger sister are both normal.
A second parent, whose 15-year-old son was slapped, said he did not notice any marks on his son's face or even know about the slapping incident until he was told by another parent more than two weeks later.
But Mr Buang's wife, Madam Nursyuhadah Teresita Abdullah, 42, a housewife, said she saw her son's red and swollen left cheek when he came home at 6pm on the last day of camp.
The next morning, he told his parents everything after they continued to question him. She used her handphone camera to take a photo of her son's face.
Over the next two days, the couple sent an MMS to the boy's form teacher, called NCSS to lodge a complaint, and went to see his MP together with his son.
Mr Buang said: 'We just wanted an answer and something to be done. Because the social worker didn't call us, the teacher didn't call, the principal was on a course and didn't know what was happening.'
A week later, the couple received the letter from Ms Fernando.
That same day, Maswan showed his mum a sex education book which was given at the camp. In the jotter book were colour photocopies of graphic illustrations on sex education, including a cartoon of a naked man and woman having sex which showed part of the man's genitals.
She said: 'I was so angry, my hand started shaking. The pictures are so gross, so inappropriate.
'He's too young, it's not the right time for him to learn all these. If I had known they'll teach him this in the camp, I would never have let him go.'
TRAUMATISED
Social worker Jessica Cheah confirmed that the book was given to all 27 boys and girls who went to the camp, all of whom were age 12 and above.
But she and Ms Fernando defended the book's contents.
Since the incident, Mr Buang has decided not to let his son go to school for the past two weeks. Also, they said their son was traumatised and has been undergoing counselling once a week.
Said Mr Buang: 'We are doing this as a lesson to other parents. They shouldn't be afraid to report such things. We don't want other children to go through such incidents.'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'I wasn;t allowed to say goodbye to kids'
SOCIAL worker Jessica Cheah said her dismissal was a shock.
Ms Cheah, 28, was in charge of the school camp, where the slapping took place.
School principal Hanisnah Kasmuri, who was not at the camp as she was away on a course, was also asked to leave.
Ms Cheah said the Singapore Association for the Deaf told her last Tuesday to resign by the next day or be terminated.
'I was shocked. They told me I didn't carry out my professional duties and they have to terminate me with immediate effect.
'I was not allowed to say goodbye to the kids.'
She resigned the next day.
Ms Cheah said she found out that others had been fired only when Ms Fernando came to say goodbye.
An acting principal has been put in place at the school.
But some 40 signatures have been gathered in a petition to reinstate Madam Hanisnah, who has been with the school for 21 years, as principal.
Mr Buang, who signed it, said: 'The principal was away and didn't know anything about what happened at the camp.
'I support the principal because she made many improvements.'
There was also concern that the PSLE is just two weeks away.

surfing today!

I was doing surfing for an hour from 10 30am to 11 30am. The waves were 1 foot to 1.5 foot. The waves seems quiet and ok!

I saw a boat on the shores, and it seems stuck on the shores. I also saw a man talked to a owner sailboat inside of the boat. I went to check it up if a owner man still live inside of the sailboat, so I walked up to close the sailboat, there is a owner man, who lives in inside of the boat. I looked around the boat, it seems 50 years old.

Members of the deaf community from all over Florida stand in solidarity with the protestors at Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon, October 14, 2006, at St. Augustine Beach, Fla
_____________________________________________________________________
About 50 members of the Florida and National Association of the Deaf came to St. Augustine on Saturday to protest the new president at Gallaudet University, the nation's only liberal arts university for the deaf and hearing-impaired.

The group protested Gallaudet's selection of Jane K. Fernandes as the Washington, D.C., school's new president. Fernandes was appointed in the spring to succeed outgoing President I. King Jordan.

More than 100 demonstrators have protested the school in Washington, D.C., including not allowing anyone to enter or leave its main academic building in the last week and writing graffiti on buildings, said Heidi Jordan, the daughter of outgoing President Jordan.

Heidi Jordan lives in St. Augustine and works at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. She said people on the FSDB campus have been very supportive, but added that there is an unidentified group that has "intimidated" her. She did not want to give details, but said the behavior "definitely has a hostile feel to it."

"My concern is about the ugliness happening at the university," she said.

The Associated Press has reported that Fernandes feels students aren't accepting her because she is not "deaf enough." She was born deaf, but grew up speaking and did not learn American Sign Language until she was 23.

Local protesters said Saturday that that is not true and that Fernandes is playing to media to add controversy.

Lissette Molina, 30, a Gallaudet alumna, traveled from Miami to join the protest on St. Augustine Beach. She said Fernandes is playing her "deaf cards."

"It's not about her being deaf enough. To say she's not deaf enough is an insult to me," she said through an interpreter. "It's about her leadership abilities. ... The reason this rebellion is taking place is because we don't have the right leader right now."

Group members said Saturday that they want Fernandes to resign and the school to reopen the presidential search process.

Christopher Wagner, president of Florida Association of the Deaf and vice president of the National Association of the Deaf, said the group chose to come to St. Augustine because Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind is located here and the city is considered the state's main center for the deaf.

However, few FSDB students came to the protest.

Heidi Jordan said judging if someone is "deaf enough" should not be an issue. She said Gallaudet has always been an "inclusive and embracive community for all deaf people."

"I feel like Gallaudet really needs our support in order to begin the healing process of this difficult time," she said.

PM Lee renews call to young Singaporeans to play their part in country's future

PM Singaporean Lee

In Few days ago, Adrian Yap went for the PM Dialogue as the representative spokeperson to touch on the disabililty issue. I am glad that I have managed to raise this issue directly to PM Lee and in the extract below, PM Lee replied that he feels that the needs of the disability shld be looked into.

Mr Lee also assured the disabled that their needs would be looked into.

He said one recent step was to have English subtitles during his National Day Message telecast on TV for the hearing impaired.

And he believes such subtitling could be extended to news bulletins as well.

He said: "If you watch the Taiwanese or Chinese news bulletins, for Chinese, they will have Chinese subtitles because all over China, people speak the same words in different ways. So you need to read the subtitle to know what he is saying.

"We ought to be able to do that for our news bulletin too, at least the English one which is technically less difficult to do.

"I think we have asked MediaCorp to look at it and I am hopeful they will be able to work something out and that would be helpful. For the movies, it may be harder, probably the DVD is the best solution."

Subtitling for the news is in the works and details will be announced at a later date.

Red durians found at Sabah, Malaysia

In summer of 2003 at Singapore! we ate the durian at my parent in law s house.

Durian found from Sabah, Malaysia last year. It was really rare!!!!

Hmm.. amazingly red??!! Looks like Sabah wild durians? Sarawak’s version is not that red, more on dark golden orange side. It’s smaller in size, less mushy and not that sweet. Seasonally rare.

My wife and son love to eat the durian, but I dont really eat durian very often. If the durian is warm, and really smelly badly! I dont like the durian warm, but I like to eat cold durian when you put the cold ref. When you are visiting southeast asia. I suggest you to try to eat the durian.. in USA, they dont grow around the America.

"Chasing Freedom"

(Last night, Mohan and I were watching Movie called Chasing Freedom. It was good movie)

"Chasing Freedom, tells the story of a
young Afghan woman (played by Layla Alizada) who is persecuted by the Taliban
for running a school for young girls and the pro bono attorney (played by Juliette Lewis) who reluctantly takes on her asylum case
after the woman is detained when she
arrives at a U.S. airport in search of refuge.

The film was inspired by a real asylum case handled by a team of dedicated pro bono attorneys for the Human Rights First at Debevoise and Plimpton. It is a sobering depiction of the nearly insurmountable obstacles that asylum seekers face when they arrive in the U.S.

For information on the Chasing Freedom Campaign, a national effort aimed at raising public awareness about asylum and detention, please contact projects@activevoice.net or visit the Active Voice website at http://www.activevoice.net/Chasing_Freedom.shtml. Check the Court TV website for screening dates and updates about the movie at http://www.courttv.com/movie/.

Mickey at Marina? from Channel Asia

SINGAPORE: One month before the four bidders for the Sentosa integrated resort (IR) put their cards on the table, comes a stunner: The winner could face a theme park rival, right here in Singapore. Mickey Mouse - who has spurned the advances of Johor - could come to town.

According to market talk, US-based operator Walt Disney has been in discussions with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on a possible theme park in Marina East. The site in question is an empty plot of land beside the new 18-hole Marina Bay Golf Course at Tanjong Rhu, operated by a unit of NTUC Club, Lianhe Zaobao reported yesterday.

While some areas around the golf course have been marked for development - such as for the 30 ha Marina East Garden - the use of this plot of land "has not been decided yet", said the Urban Redevelopment Authority. Although Disney and STB would neither confirm nor deny the rumours, a source told Today that negotiations have been progressing well.

"The talks went further than they have ever gone before," he said.

In the 1990s, Singapore almost had its own Disneyland in the Seletar area, but the deal fell through because Disney wanted a huge 300 ha chunk of land - over four times bigger than its Tokyo attraction - but was not prepared to fork out its own money.

Disney eventually went to Hong Kong because its Government owned 57 per cent of the whole operation. On why Disney may bite this time, the source said: "Disney could be emboldened by the plans for the Marina area, including the IR there, and agree to come since so much is being done to attract tourists."

It remains to be seen whether the government offers to take a stake in the project, how large the park will be and how the proposal affects the Sentosa IR aspirants. Genting, for instance, is counting on rival park operator Universal Studios as its trump card for the Sentosa race, while Kerzner International is likely to operate its own water-based theme park. Said Mr Sean Monaghan, an analyst at Merrill Lynch: "The viability of the Sentosa theme park will be dependent on the kind of competition it would face. Just five weeks before submission, it would be difficult for the government to announce anything major that will affect their plans."

Still, if Disney is successfully wooed, the head-on competition here could prove interesting, he said.

"If Singapore adopts the Hong Kong Disneyland model, then the private investors in Sentosa IR will effectively be in competition with the government," he added. According to reports, it's believed that the Singapore Disneyland - if it goes through - would be of the same scale as the 70ha Tokyo theme park.

This small scale, and Singapore's hot weather, could lead to Disney adopting a new generation of indoor theme parks that its CEO Robert Iger floated last year in a Wall Street Journal report.

He said there were "three or four entities in the world, locations with money, that are looking for site-based entertainment" - full rides and shows within a building.

"I'll call them theme parks but they won't necessarily be along the same lines as parks we've built before ... In the next year to two years ... we will commit to creating a new concept or some entity outside the US," he said then. Analysts pointed out he could be hinting at Singapore.

STB declined to confirm anything yesterday but said that it was always on the lookout for major tourism projects, beyond the two IRs. It said it maintains a "healthy dialogue" with key players, but did not identify anybody. A Disney spokesperson added that Singapore continued to be a good market but it had nothing to announce.

Whether Mickey Mouse will cause unhappiness among the Sentosa bidders remains to be seen, as three of the quartet - Genting, Kerzner and Harrah's Entertainment - remained tight-lipped when asked to comment. The fourth, Eighth Wonder, hailed Disney as the "undisputed global leader" in the theme park industry, taking a dig at Genting's tie-up with Universal.

Mr Nicholas Mak, a director of consultancy and research at Knight Frank, is more sanguine about the potential tussle between rival theme park operators.

He said: "Look at Gold Coast. It has three theme parks, yet each of them is different. Without these parks, Gold Coast is just a small town with nice beaches. So why not two in Singapore? This will really make the whole place more exciting." - TODAY

BIGGEST PAH for captional in Singapore!!!!!

FYI: The American people got a Closed captional silver machine in 1978. I think, There had only provided about 5 channels show. how do I know about this? I saw this CC machine, when I was a kid.
A lot of An American people was really trilliing that George Bush Sr, who was Signature for ADA laws and he was president from 1988 to 1995.(George Bush JR is sucker now)haaha. When the ADA law passed in 1990 then, the CC required to do almost of all Channels TV showing. In few years ago, Sucker Bush Jr cut the budget for Closed Capttional for around 10 thousand dollars;however, The government cannot cut Closed Captional at the education purpose Tv show: discovery, animal plant, and kids education show to Deafies people. mostly American people got angry about this for cut the 10 thousand dollars. Anyway, There have a lot of provide for Deafies people to enternment to watch TV and movie. In movie, they have open Captional for deaf people in special time. The open Captial for deaf people is: www.insightcinema.org I do really happy for Adrian to do working hard for better service for Deafies Singaporean. I cannot wait to see our TV turn CC or subtitle on this coming summer. I am sure that my wife will happy to watch TV often due to her love to hear the news on the TV. I will taken photos of NEWEST CC at Singapore on this summer. My point is that If there is set up the subtitle or Close captional for deafies Singaporean peoople on Sept 25... You must say "thank you to Adrian Yap to doing this for your own country!!!!!!!

from Adrian Yap: I got the good news from my friend that MDA will provide captioning services for certain programmes at certain time slots. It is definitely a biggest breakthrough in the deaf history in Singapore where many deaf are at their disadvantage when they watch the English news. Currently, there are no captions being provided simultaneously with the newscasters and there is no way for the deaf and hard-of-hearing to catch the newscasters reading the news. For years, we have been fighting for the news to be incorporated with the subtitles but many a times, our request for the captioning has been flatly rejected due to the small population of the deaf and lack of fund to provide captioning service.

If you wanted to get more info about an America Closed Captional web site is
